How do you get the bitrate of the resulting file? I can't reproduce your problem here :/ Please install madplay and run madplay -o null:/dev/null -vvv test.mp3 on the file and paste the output here. hi Sebastian ;-) madplay reports that the file is encoded with VBR... i got the bitrate from the nautilus property audio tab, gxine, amarok, and vlc. after the test with mad play i tried also: Rhytmbox - reports the bitrate as 'Unknown' xmms - reports the correct bitrate so i it seems not to be a gst lame problem.. this bug should be closed for gstreamer-plugin-ugly-multiverse, i think. but i also think it should be redirected to the package that is in charge for the wrong informations reported by the above softwares. -- problems in mp3 conversion https://launchpad.net/bugs/67982 -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs

This should be nautilus afaik.
