Public bug reported:

fourth in the series of failed package installs (attempted hardy ->
lucid upgrade):

1. console-setup
2. xorg1:7.5+5ubuntu1
3. ubuntu-minimal 1.197
4. ubuntu-desktop1.197

(3 and 4 seem to be subsets of ubuntu-meta)

Now I have an ominous dialog saying

" (-) Could not install the upgrades

The upgrade is now aborted. Your system could be in an
unusable state. A recovery will run now (dpkg --configure -a).

    (Close)"

HTH, cheers
