[Bug 69800] Re: Please package original icons from source
sensors-applet (1.8.2-1) unstable; urgency=low . * New upstream release. * Icons are now licensed under the Creative Commons BY-SA 3.0 license, which is suitable for Debian's main section (closes: #448029). * debian/new-upstream script: no longer necessary, removed. * debian/watch: call uupdate instead. * debian/README.Debian: others have informed me that the procedure for building with NVIDIA support works for them, so remove the text requesting confirmation that it actually works. . sensors-applet (1.8.1+dfsg-1) unstable; urgency=low . * New upstream release. * debian/new-upstream: wrote a python script to automate the job of replacing the non-free artwork in upstream's tarball with the GPL-licensed artwork from an older release. * debian/watch: call this script when there is a new release available. * Recommend hddtemp as requested in #431718). ** Changed in: sensors-applet (Ubuntu) Status: Fix Committed = Fix Released -- Please package original icons from source https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/69800 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is the bug contact for Ubuntu. -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs

Updated to CC BY-SA 3.0 I was not sure about using GPL and if that would have problems with CC or not. [Bug 69800] Re: Please package original icons from source
Hi Phil, First of all, thanks for considering to release the icons under an additional license. From my point of view (I produce the packages of sensors-applet that end up in Debian), an unambigous statement that the icons are additionally licensed under a Debian-compatible license would be great. For the sake of simplicity, it would be better if you chose the same terms as the rest of sensors applet (that is, GPL version 2 or higher); but if you would prefer to say with the Creative Commons licenses, the CC BY-SA 3.0 license is also Debian-compatible. The following text should do it, delete text from the portion in {braces} as applicable: I, as the author of the icons used by the GNOME Sensors Applet, state that they are licensed under {the GNU General Public License, version 2 or any later version/the Creative Commons Attribution-Share Alike 3.0 license}. If you have some way to digitally sign the statement (with PGP for instance) it would help, but it's not really necessary. Note that as Cesare said, this doesn't prevent the original license (CC BY-SA 2.5) from continuing to apply. Thanks again! -- Please package original icons from source https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/69800 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is the bug contact for Ubuntu. -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs
[Bug 69800] Re: Please package original icons from source
Well, he can always double-license them: SA-BY-CC to make Tango happy and (for instance) GPL to make Debian happy. Beside that, the only addition he has to make in his license is a statement like: All derivative works must be released under either or both of these licenses. But if he doesn't want to do it, I'll be happy to repackage the package for Ubuntu myself. -- Please package original icons from source https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/69800 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is the bug contact for Ubuntu. -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs

@Sam - I have emailed Philip again to see if he would be willing to change the license so will let you know what response I get. @Cesare - thanks again, your work in improving sensors-applet in Ubuntu is greatly appreciated. -- Please package original icons from source https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/69800 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is the bug contact for Ubuntu. -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs

It would be better to get the author of the icons to relicense them under the GPL or CC 3.0 licenses or similar. Upstream icons are licensed with the CC-BY-SA 2.5 license (like all Tango icons), which is not compatible with the DFSG. These can be checked here: http://www.uoguelph.ca/~fanguelo/tango-sensors-2.tar.gz @Desktop team: can we consider them for inclusion? -- Please package original icons from source https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/69800 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is the bug contact for Ubuntu. -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs
[Bug 69800] Re: Please package original icons from source
I don't see why he should. They are part of the Tango theme which is ALL licensed with the SA-BY-CC. The change wrt Debian is minimal, its just a matter of using the tarball from upstream instead of the Debian fiddled one (plus minor mods to copyright and watch). I built a package without an hitch, screenshots attached. ** Attachment added: Old DFSG compatible Icons http://launchpadlibrarian.net/9950122/Icons-old.png -- Please package original icons from source https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/69800 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is the bug contact for Ubuntu. -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs

I'm not sure how to request that Ubuntu pull in the original icons. By the way, do you have the email address of the author of the icons? I'd like to ask him to consider dual-licensing the icons under a DFSG- free license, which would solve this mess in both distributions. :) -- Please package original icons from source https://launchpad.net/bugs/69800 -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs
