I'm still getting this problem with a fully updated Natty install when logging in via Ubuntu Classic. The unity sidebar appears right on top of my gnome panel. [Bug 700645] Re: unity and gnome-panel are started on login on ubuntu Desktop edition
** Description changed: Binary package hint: unity - Both unity and gnome-panel are run at the same during and ubuntu desktop - session whereas this choice in the login windows is supposed to enable - the user to choose between the gnome-panel (ubuntu classic desktop) and - unity (Ubuntu desktop edition). + Both unity and gnome-panel are run at the same time during an ubuntu + desktop session whereas this choice in the login windows is supposed to + enable the user to choose between the gnome-panel (ubuntu classic + desktop) and unity (Ubuntu desktop edition). On my computer, the gnome-panel is not listed in the startup application menu but it is still launching on startup, even though it is usually under the unity panel, it can also be over it (see screenshot). Please note that issuing a pkill gnome-panel through the terminal shuts down the gnome-panel for 1 or 2 seconds, but it reapears directly after that. Also, when the gnome-panel is under the untiy panel (thus invisible) one can still decipher its presence through the workspace-switcher (from the unity panel) (it appears on the top of the workspace label, see screenshot-1) ProblemType: Bug DistroRelease: Ubuntu 11.04 Package: unity 3.2.8-0ubuntu1 ProcVersionSignature: Ubuntu 2.6.37-12.26-generic 2.6.37 Uname: Linux 2.6.37-12-generic i686 Architecture: i386 CompizPlugins: No value set for `/apps/compiz-1/general/allscreens/options/active_plugins' Date: Sun Jan 9 13:34:53 2011 InstallationMedia: Ubuntu 11.04 "Natty Narwhal" - Alpha i386 (20101202) InstallationMedia_: Ubuntu 11.04 "Natty Narwhal" - Alpha i386 (20101202) MachineType: System manufacturer System Product Name PciDisplay: 01:00.0 VGA compatible controller [0300]: ATI Technologies Inc RV530LE [Radeon X1600] [1002:71ce] (prog-if 00 [VGA controller]) ProcEnviron: - LANGUAGE=en_US:en - LANG=en_US.UTF-8 - LC_MESSAGES=en_US.utf8 - SHELL=/bin/bash + LANGUAGE=en_US:en + LANG=en_US.UTF-8 + LC_MESSAGES=en_US.utf8 + SHELL=/bin/bash ProcKernelCmdLine: BOOT_IMAGE=/boot/vmlinuz-2.6.37-12-generic root=UUID=df25858b-0c16-4a25-9580-53d28970d85a ro vt.handoff=7 quiet splash ProcVersionSignature_: Ubuntu 2.6.37-12.26-generic 2.6.37 RelatedPackageVersions: - xserver-xorg 1:7.5+6ubuntu6 - libgl1-mesa-glx 7.9+repack-1ubuntu3 - libdrm2 2.4.22-2ubuntu1 - xserver-xorg-video-intel 2:2.13.901-2ubuntu2 - xserver-xorg-video-ati 1:6.13.2-1ubuntu2 + xserver-xorg 1:7.5+6ubuntu6 + libgl1-mesa-glx 7.9+repack-1ubuntu3 + libdrm2 2.4.22-2ubuntu1 + xserver-xorg-video-intel 2:2.13.901-2ubuntu2 + xserver-xorg-video-ati 1:6.13.2-1ubuntu2 SourcePackage: unity XorgConf: Error: [Errno 2] No such file or directory: '/etc/X11/xorg.conf' dmi.bios.date: 02/17/2005 dmi.bios.vendor: American Megatrends Inc. dmi.bios.version: 080009 dmi.board.name: P4P800SE dmi.board.vendor: ASUSTeK Computer Inc. dmi.board.version: Rev 2.xx dmi.chassis.asset.tag: Asset-1234567890 dmi.chassis.type: 3 dmi.chassis.vendor: Chassis Manufacture dmi.chassis.version: Chassis Version dmi.modalias: dmi:bvnAmericanMegatrendsInc.:bvr080009:bd02/17/2005:svnSystemmanufacturer:pnSystemProductName:pvrSystemVersion:rvnASUSTeKComputerInc.:rnP4P800SE:rvrRev2.xx:cvnChassisManufacture:ct3:cvrChassisVersion: dmi.product.name: System Product Name dmi.product.version: System Version dmi.sys.vendor: System manufacturer system: distro = Ubuntu, architecture = i686, kernel = 2.6.37-12-generic -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/700645 Title: unity and gnome-panel are started on login on ubuntu Desktop edition -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs

I am sorry I misjudge the use of "opinion" 's status I thought it was meant to ask the maintainer if the reported issue was a bug from the package or just a misconfiguration. [Bug 700645] Re: unity and gnome-panel are started on login on ubuntu Desktop edition
I do have gnome-session 2.31.1-0ubuntu9 installed on my computer (verified through the synaptic manager) and after reinstallation of this package and a reboot, the problem persists. I don't know if it is relevant but I noticed that on startup, unity starts first, displaying it's panel (on the left),and then the gnome-panel starts (showing at the bottom of the screen, not at the top (the unity panel being over it)) -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/700645 Title: unity and gnome-panel are started on login on ubuntu Desktop edition -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs
[Bug 700645] Re: unity and gnome-panel are started on login on ubuntu Desktop edition
As I wrote (but Mark can't see that in the plane :)), I uploaded that Sunday as gnome-session 2.32.1-0ubuntu9, so it's rather fix released, setting that state :) Please do not hesitate to report if you still have that issue with this version. ** Changed in: unity (Ubuntu) Status: In Progress => Fix Released -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/700645 Title: unity and gnome-panel are started on login on ubuntu Desktop edition -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs

Re: [Bug 700645] Re: unity and gnome-panel are started on login on ubuntu Desktop edition
The "opinion" status isn't correct, that status is used when the software is behaving as the desginers / project leaders intend, but it's reasonable to argue it should behave differently. I'm writing this in an airplane or would change the status myself, it should be "In progress" till it's "Fix released" :-) -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/700645 Title: unity and gnome-panel are started on login on ubuntu Desktop edition -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs
