It doesn't only affect Searchmonkey. I have the same problem when Nicotine+ is open. If you try to open the gnome-system-monitor it crashes immediately. I attached a stack trace for this. Yup - still a bug - exactly as the OP describes. Continues to be a problem on 11.04/Natty for System Monitor 2.28.2 and searchmonkey 0.8.1 If System monitor is running, it exits if searchmonkey is started.
