Brian, sorry for the delay, I just got to your email processing my long overdue mailbox... Unfortunately I've reinstalled Ubuntu from scratch since then and I my /etc/apt/sources.list is just a standard clean file from Feisty. Suddenly on my machine it started to work correctly. The only relevant thing I could remember is checking a checkbox "Proposed Updates" in System, Administration, Software Sources, Internet Updates. Here the share is accessible and programs like evince and eog open files just fine. I can confirm this. For me this happens when accessing mp3s shared on Windows machine over VFS. - both Rhythmbox and Totem report "could not read from source" - eog does open single images from samba shares but doesn't enable "back" and "forward" buttons for the directory (this may be another issue however) - evince does happily read pdf's So may be this is really for music and video media only... P.S. Pretty annoying regression if you ask me since I keep all my media on a single machine at home which happens to run Windows. You must tell us how do you access your multimedia files. Which software do you use and if you use nautilus/konqueror... Translation : Under Edgy Eft, it is impossible to read the least multi-media file by using Samba to join the waiter which has its files. The other files (texts etc) do not have a concern, the codecs either considering one can read these files on my hard disk.
