While I was testing with "Live System" there was no problem at all on my
machine.
Then I installed with "Alternate" to get an encrypted LVM and get on every
start the message "No video mode set" which seemed to be from BIOS. System
started then but crashed after some minutes without any visible reason. There
was no way to work with it.
Installed from scratch with "Desktop edition" got no error message on starting
up but after some time (longer than before) it crashed and I copied the syslog.
Just now I'm working with the system and since an hour there was no problem. I
hopefully will be able to finish this report.
I use a Dell Inspiron 1525 until now (Hardy / Karmic) with no problems.

Ok, thanks for following up. Possibly was addressed by the gpu fix in
2:2.14.0-1ubuntu8 - bug report #719751 is almost identical to this one
and was reportedly improved by that. In fact I think I'll dupe that one
here.

[Bug 711999] Re: [i915g] GPU lockup - (ESR: 0x00000001 IPEHR: 0x02000011) Hangcheck timer elapsed... failed to reset chip

2011-02-17 Thread Bryce Harrington
Here is a kernel with a DEBUG patch added (note this is not a fix, just
a mechanism to confirm the root cause). Could you affected please test
out these kernels (they should work on Maverick too) and report back
here. The kernels are at the URL below:

http://people.canonical.com/~apw/lp714719-natty/

After booting this, please do whatever you do to reproduce the freeze
(if you can), then ssh into the box and collect the output of 'dmesg >
dmesg.txt' and post it here. If you can't reproduce the crash within
say a day or so, report that back here too.

If it happens that you haven't seen a freeze at all for a few days (esp.
if you haven't seen it after doing a system update), then it may have
been solved via a mystery kernel fix. In that case please note so here
and the bug report can be set to 'Fix Released'.
