Public bug reported:

@GhostWheel:~$ lsb_release -rd
Description: Ubuntu 10.10
Release: 10.10

@GhostWheel:~$ uname -a
Linux GhostWheel 2.6.35-25-generic #44-Ubuntu SMP Fri Jan 21 17:40:48 UTC 2011
i686 GNU/Linux

What I expected to happen: I suspend. I resume. I can continue to
work with the computer.

What happened instead: I suspend. I resume. I work with the computer
for a few seconds and then everything locks up. Am unable to even shift
to another terminal window to somewhat gracefully shut down.

Some other notes: I have just clean installed and updated Maverick.
I've not added or otherwise altered any software. I can also
deterministically reproduce the suspend problem either with the USB
startup disk or with the original, not updated version of Maverick.
And, I can deterministically reproduce the problem with the amd64
version of Maverick.

Why did I install Maverick knowing that the suspend problem existed?
Because a) I have what seemed to be serious problems with earlier
versions of Ubuntu and b) I was hopeful that the kernel updates once I
installed Maverick would fix the problems. Clearly they didn't.

Regarding b), I wish there were an easier way to test the most recent
kernel updates on a new Ubuntu version to see if serious suspend /
hibernate problems etc. exist--easier than having to load and update the
entire system on my computer. I tried running update manager on my USB
startup disk, just installing the kernel updates. This failed because
apparently the initramfs is read only. It looks like the installation
.iso's for new versions of Ubuntu such as Maverick rarely, if ever, get
updated to reflect current kernel versions, so that doesn't leave much
possibility for knowing whether serious problems have been fixed in
later kernel updates for Maverick--with installing that version.

As for why I'm desperate to move to a new version of Ubuntu, let me
explain. In 8.04, I had no suspend / resume problems. The system was
rock stable and it was a pleasure to use my computer. However, I
changed my broadband provider to WIMAX and, given that the WIMAX modem
only gets a good signal in one spot of our house, I had to start using
wifi to connect my desktop to the Internet. I spent most of a work week
trying to get wifi to work on 8.04, to no avail. I then installed 9.04,
which made wifi possible, but the system would hang when I tried to
suspend or hibernate every 5 or so times I tried to suspend or hibernate
(see bug report #502801). I've been upgrading to new versions of the
system ever since (every version up to 10.10) in the hopes that that
would go away. This bug may be related to the fact that every few
minutes my kernel logs would report ACPI errors (illegal i/o port
address /length above 64K). I was thrilled to find that in Maverick the
ACPI errors no longer occurred, but now I can deterministically crash
the system simply by waking from suspend--which is worse. Granted, I'm
on an old system & maybe I should update it (I did try to update the
BIOS, but this had no effect on the errors in 10.10). On the other
hand, the system meets my home needs and I hate throwing things out for
no good reason. I love ubuntu on my office machine, where I don't have
serious problems. Just wish these problems were solved for my home
machine.
