[Bug 72143] Re: please revert startup sounds
The Ubuntu start up sound in Dapper was excellent. Somehow since Edgy it sounds like a Casio keyboard was left in a kindergarten. -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/72143 Title: please revert startup sounds -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs

[Bug 72143] Re: please revert startup sounds
Just my 2 cents added: Each time I hear the rattle at the end I think my cdrom/hard drive is about to explode. That sound isn't healthy. Reminds me far too much of something mechanical breaking down. Maybe that's just me, but I thought I'd mention it. -- please revert startup sounds https://launchpad.net/bugs/72143 -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs

[Bug 72143] Re: please revert startup sounds
I think the new startup sound is nice, in composition, but I dislike the actual samples used, as they sound like they are taken directly from the Korg X5D synthesizer, which makes it sound rather homemade. Is it possible to remake the sound with different samples? Maybe this would fix this bug as well. -- please revert startup sounds https://launchpad.net/bugs/72143 -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs

[Bug 72143] Re: please revert startup sounds
While one can discuss the merits of the sounds on aesthetic grounds, I would like to address the latter portion of your comment. Currently, the modern world moves at the speed of thought -- it changes, it morphs, it is nebulous. It is possible that an operating system that strives to be contemporary and modern should _perhaps_ attempt to permit such metamorphosis. I wholeheartedly agree with you that consistency is worthy of concern, but I believe the current branding of Ubuntu serves that purpose -- without focusing on the minutiae. The consistency is constructed from the cohesive sum of the whole, not the discreet partial elements. Where the technology within Ubuntu can change quite dramatically, we should permit for the possibility of the same on aesthetic functionality. Ultimately, change is healthy. We will certainly make mistakes in the process, but that is the nature of innovation. Our operating system should strive to push new limits, set new standards, and, most importantly, change at the rate that society is changing. That is part of the beauty of it. -- please revert startup sounds https://launchpad.net/bugs/72143 -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs

Currently, the modern world moves at the speed of thought -- it changes, it morphs, it is nebulous. It is possible that an operating system that strives to be contemporary and modern should _perhaps_ attempt to permit such metamorphosis. I suppose whether you think the modern world moves in those ways or not depends on your point of view. Anyway, to be clear, I didn't mean to imply that there is something wrong with innovation and positive change. But the startup sounds have not undergone such a change - the previous sounds were really professional and would be a great way for users to identify Ubuntu. The current ones have not got those attributes. Ubuntu hasn't changed its awesome logo, because users will identify with it. There was no need to change the awesome startup sounds either. (Again, nothing against change per se, if the logo was a dud I'd be the first to be crying for it to be improved.) -- please revert startup sounds https://launchpad.net/bugs/72143 -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs
[Bug 72143] Re: please revert startup sounds
I actually kind of like the startup sounds..but I never heard the old ones before. Is there a place I could get them to hear what they sound like (the pre-Edgy ones)? Thanks! -- please revert startup sounds https://launchpad.net/bugs/72143 -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs
[Bug 72143] Re: please revert startup sounds
but the old sounds were much more relaxing, professional the previous sounds were really professional It seems over the Edgy cycle this term 'professional' was bandied around as some catch phrase. This is especially interesting when considering the compositions of the various teams and the education / professional background of the participants. Once again, it seems the issue here is change. I am quite certain that if one were to conduct a poll, the sounds would attain an acceptable level of approval. I am quite certain that there are disagreements over coding style, documentation grammar, etc., that are all as relevant -- but perhaps not quite as high profile. We _are_ a team however, across all of the various elements, and we need to support each other. Ultimately, reversion is probably not the wisest choice -- as progression would seem more appropriate. Further still, until we _concretely_ define Ubuntu creative design policy and treat it with the same attention as we do with the technological aspects, we are doomed to repeat the same mistakes. Perhaps we should be discussing the mechanics of design that 'work' for Ubuntu versus, such as useful terms as 'relaxing' etc. This is all far more critical towards building a comprehensive design philosophy as opposed to dissecting the smallest of details regarding our current evolutionary state. Let's work towards the future, not mimicry of the past. Those were the days isn't a good enough excuse as, for us, _these_ are the days. -- please revert startup sounds https://launchpad.net/bugs/72143 -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs
