Now on ubuntu 10.11. I want to revive this bug. Unity eats tons of RAM. Check that yourself. 'Terminal - Top - F - n' Intel Driver. I believe this bug has nothing to do with Unity, supposedly it is a kernel bug due to the following: 1. I use XFCE 4.8, and have exactly the same bug. With the same XFCE 4.8 and older kernel 2.6.35.25 I had 17% memory usage (out of 1.7 Gb total memory) - no active user programs running, now I have 72%!!! with 2.6.38.8 kernel. It is interesting that system monitor doesn't show any program consuming more than 21 mb or RAM. 2. I have ATI video chip HD4200 on the motherboard. 3. I never see this happening, it's likely this is coming from a graphics issue.
