2012-04-01 Thread Christopher M. Penalver
Peter Hedlund, thank you for reporting this and helping make Ubuntu
better. This bug was reported a while ago and there hasn't been any
activity in it recently. We were wondering if this is still an issue?
Can you try with the latest development release of Ubuntu? ISO CD images
are available from http://cdimage.ubuntu.com/releases/ .

If it remains an issue, could you run the following command from a
Terminal (Applications->Accessories->Terminal). It will automatically
gather and attach updated debug information to this report.

apport-collect -p linux

Also, if you could test the latest upstream kernel available that would
be great. It will allow additional upstream developers to examine the
issue. Refer to https://wiki.ubuntu.com/KernelMainlineBuilds . Once
you've tested the upstream kernel, please remove the 'needs-upstream-
testing' tag. This can be done by clicking on the yellow pencil icon
next to the tag located at the bottom of the bug description and
deleting the 'needs-upstream-testing' text. Please let us know your
results.

Thanks in advance.

[Bug 745220] Re: Kerneloops in mac20811 on Macbook Air

2011-04-04 Thread Daniel van Vugt
I think most of us would like in-kernel drivers to work perfectly and
not have to rely non-free kernel modules. However until that happens,
occasionally the non-free kernel modules will provide greater
reliability. I too hope this changes soon.

P.S. Good news - Looking at the kernel 2.6.39 changelogs it seems
broadcom developers are working madly to improve brcm80211 right now.

2011-04-04 Thread Peter Hedlund
Thanks for your response. But that is a little like saying I might find
running Mac OS X even more stable...

Being able to use the new in-kernel driver was one major reason for
upgrading to Natty. It is fairly stable and the fact that it reconnects
almost instantly when resuming from sleep is a major step forward.

[Bug 745220] Re: Kerneloops in mac20811 on Macbook Air

2011-04-03 Thread Daniel van Vugt
You might find the Broadcom STA driver much more stable than brcm80211
which is still in staging in kernel 2.6.38...

You can switch to the stable STA driver by:
  1. In Additional Drivers, install "Broadcom STA wireless driver". This
installs the "wl" kernel module (bcmwl-kernel-source).
  2. Work around bug #747002:
sudo echo "blacklist brcm80211" > /etc/modprobe.d/blacklist-bcrm80211.conf

This works well on a MacBook Air 3,1.
