(sorry for my bad English)
Why the workspace switcher is on the launcher?
I think the laucher reserved for applications... So I suggest that to move
the workspace switcher to the panel.
When I want to switch between workspace I just click ones with the left mouse
button.
And when I want to switch directly to a workspace or add/remove (settings)
workspaces I click on the icon (which is on the panel) with the right mouse
button then a menu pops out and there is a list about the workspaces and the
end of the list there is "Workspace Settings".
- This is the best place where workspace switcher can take place. Because if
someone doesn't need workspace switcher (use only one workspace) then on
her/his computer workspace switcher won't take unnecessary place on the
launcher.

(the attached image is about mac os x leopard "spacesmenu"...)
But in mac os x when you want to see all the workspaces you get it with a
shortcut. (I know)
In Ubuntu (perhaps) you get it with a left mouse click on the switcher.
+ Yes, I know Unity must support tablets...

that menu (directly switch, settings, workspace switcher).

(One more time: sorry for my bad English)
This is just my opinion.
