We shipped 8.780 in maverick, so I gather the 8.831 version you had installed on maverick was self-installed either from the AMD website or some PPA; in either case it's not an officially supported upgrade path, so YMMV on upgrades. Your DKMS build log indicates that it fails to build an fglrx 8.831 kernel module (Catalyst 11.3 by the looks of it). That version of fglrx is incompatible with your 2.6.38 kernel.
