Lenbok, great find! Thanks a lot for that. I too had that enabled on my PC, but evidently didn't on my Laptop. Therefore, I thought it was a problem caused by upgrading from previous version to 11.04, but this is the setting that's actually causing it. I had the same problem (with both Unity and Ubuntu Classic), on a fully up to date Natty install. I found that the setting that was causing the problem was in CompizConfig Settings Manager, Workarounds - Keep previews of minimized windows, which I had enabled in part of my vain attempt to actually have some kind of reasonable tab switching that included minimized windows. If unity --reset is fixing the problem, it means its a problem with compiz user configuration copied over from upgrades. For some they are invisible, for others they show up but 'avoid' clicks. I have the problem on my PC that upgraded from 10.04 to 10.10 to 11.04, without the full XUbuntu installation. So I don't have Unity, never had and never will get it. This rules out Unity itself. My laptop is a clean install of 11.04, build the same way my PC was 18 months ago when I installed 10.04 on it: stripped to the bone and build up from there with only the absolute required packages. This is showing a different issue when applications are minimized: they jump locations on the task list. If they were at the left or middle, they end up at the right end when restored. This doesn't happen all the time, but it happens enough times to make it annoying. So, there IS something wrong with minimizing windows. Just want to say that I had *exactly* the same issues as described in this bug's description. Everything was 100 percent reproducible -- minimizing never worked right at all. unity --reset has solved the problem. Update on my computer. Before I shut down yesterday, I did a quick test with shading the window and it does give the desired effect. But in my past experience when I had several windows open, it wasn't always what I wanted to happen, as it would either not work, break another window or actually do work. I'm seeing the same behaviour on my Xfce system, upgraded from 10.10 to 11.04. Whenever I minimize an application, restoring it results in a window that can no longer be mapped properly. Scale doesn't see it. Clicking on the application in the task list panel applet sometimes helps, but most of the time, if the window is there, I can't focus it as clicking on it makes it invisible and the application that was running behind it pops up. When I click on the place where the window should be, it comes back into view but unfocussed. Focus cannot be send to the app either. Alt+tab doesn't always work. Shading the window doesn't help much either, sometimes it makes things worse. Only way to fix this on my system is to close the application and start it again. My laptop has a different issue with minimized applications. It doesn't display the problem noted above, but instead it moves the window on the panel as if it's newly created. The Xfce4 tasklist applet can sort entries based on timestamp, putting them from old to new in a left to right order. Both systems have a very minimal installation and do not have Unity. All they have is Compiz-fusion from Ubuntu and Emerald window decorator from a PPA (because the Ubuntu version segfaults). Both use an nVidia card with the same driver (nVidia-current). I can consistently reproduce this problem. The screencast describes the problem accurately, including the screen corruption. show_desktop is enabled in gconf-editor under nautilus preferences. This is on a clean, unmodified CCSM setup (except for changes to Sync to VBlank). Do you have the option 'show_desktop' disabled in gconf-editor under nautilus settings, if yes enable that and see if the issue happens and let us know? I have made a 2 minute screencast with subtitles demonstrating the problems I have been having with minimized windows. The screencast only shows firefox, but the problems occur for all windows. The problem has been marginally improved since my original report, probably by a recent update; now all you have to do to fix an unminimized window is shade and unshade, and it is possible to interact with windows behind previously minimized windows, although the cursor image still looks like it is hovering over the minimized window, and minimized windows still have focus, and in the video I demonstrate that you can type in minimized windows, until you click something else. To reproduce: 1) Open two windows. Put one of them behind the other and minimize the top one. Try to use part of the bottom one that was previously covered by the top one. Try to unminimize the window using the launcher. Clicking on the launcher does work if you unfocus the window. However minimizing the window does not immediately unfocus it.
