Same happens to me. The camera works fine in guvcview and cheese. I have a similar problem under KDE on Ubuntu 13.04 ( with Unity no issue) : - black screen for video and webcam box. skype (4.1.0.20.0-0ubuntu0.12.04.2) seems only to add a dependency on libssl1.0.0, needed for Microsoft account authentication.
