[Bug 756560] Re: Screen redraw issues when using Anki

2011-05-25 Thread Tobias Fankhänel
With some mouse acrobatics, Anki is at least usable with Unity: A screen
redraw is achieved when clicking on the middle of the top panel.

It is not fun though, because one has to do it after each click on Show
Answer or Easy/Medium/Hard. I favor the Ubuntu Classic workaround.

Has anybody tried Unity 2d yet?

2011-05-25 Thread soro2005
In unity, triggering the screen redraw by hitting the super key (the
one with the windows symbol on it) works for me. If you don't just tap
the key, but hold it down for 0.5 seconds, the black dash overlay
doesn't pop up. Easier than clicking around with the mouse. Still
annoying.

[Bug 756560] Re: Screen redraw issues when using Anki

2011-05-25 Thread Jonathan Lumb
Somebody just emailed me with the following workaround. I don't have
time to test right now but maybe people could try it out and report
back.

-
I had this same bug with gnome3 on fedora 15.

This is not a compiz bug but a XRender bug (I think, I have no idea to
be honest)

Got some help in #qt channel on freenode.
the workaround is to set the QT_GRAPHICSSYSTEM variable before starting anki.

export QT_GRAPHICSSYSTEM=raster
anki

I don't know why it works. I hope it works for you ubuntu folks too :)

/Daniel

[Bug 756560] Re: Screen redraw issues when using Anki

2011-05-25 Thread poikiloid
yes, this seems to work. also, if you quit and restart anki, it still
works, so i imagine you only have to export the parameter once per
session. Thanks Jon and Daniel.

Does someone know if this means this report should be changed to list
some other package like xrender or pyqt?

for anyone who is not clear:
you open a terminal and type:

export QT_GRAPHICSSYSTEM=raster

and then press Enter. You can then start anki by typing anki then hit
Enter in terminal, or in your usual way.

If you include the text below somewhere in your .bashrc file (located in

export QT_GRAPHICSSYSTEM=raster

2011-05-25 Thread Jonathan Lumb
This still doesn't explain why things worked in 10.10 and not in 11.04
though - there has clearly been a regression somewhere that needs
looking into and fixing as we can't expect users to apply such a
workaround manually.

2011-05-25 Thread soro2005
Excellent! Changing the QT graphicssystem session-wide might have
negative effects on other QT applications, such as Libreoffice. To just
have Anki in raster mode, it seems possible to invoke it from the
command line like this:

anki -graphicssystem raster

This can also go into the Exec line of the anki.desktop file (in
/usr/share/applications/anki.desktop):

Exec=anki -graphicssystem raster %f

I have redraw issues with Libreoffice too sometimes so this might not be
such a bad thing to enable system-wide for users with Nvidia graphics cards
who are experiencing problems. Apparently it boosts the performance of any
QT interfaces.

Thanks for your tips for changing the desktop file!

[Bug 756560] Re: Screen redraw issues when using Anki

2011-05-24 Thread poikiloid
on the Ubuntu login screen at the bottom (after you click your name),
you can choose to log in NOT in Unity version (Ubuntu), but instead in
Ubuntu Classic or Ubuntu Classic (no effects). I tried this, and
anki is working fine on both Classic and Classic (no effects). this
suggests to me that the problem is with compiz (since I did not have to
install python-qt from source to get it to work, but simply switch to a
desktop that doesn't use compiz. although...i guess the problem could be
that python-qt is the culprit in how it interacts with compiz...). I
tried going into Unity desktop and open CompizConfig Settings Manager
and disabled the Effects like Animation, but that messes up the
interface (panel, launcher, etc, disappear).

unfortunately, in the next release of Ubuntu (11.10), there will not be
any Ubuntu Classic option anymore. hopefully this will be resolved in
compiz and/or pyqt by then. otherwise, i guess for most people, they'll
have install another desktop like Kubuntu, Lubuntu, etc in order to use
anki until this is fixed.

As it happens, I have had the problem in Classic as well, but very
infrequntly. 1 out of every 100 repetitions or so. Mostly in the
beginnin of the session, then fine for the longest time. Definitely to
live with in my case for the moment. I didn't use Unity for more than a
few hours.
