graphics card is a radeon R580 / X1900 XT. i'm getting these freezes
only since upgrading to natty, no issues with maverick. also, i cant use
unity3d; if i try, monitor just turns black and goes to sleep.

2011-05-09 Thread Sam_
After five days with no issue it occurs again out of nothing. Since I've
read over some bug reports I wonder if it has something to do with
gfxpayload.

rww, do a system update; your mesa is a bit old, so try reproducing the
bug with mesa 7.10.2-0ubuntu2.

[Bug 757141] Re: Xorg freeze: "Try Ubuntu" leads to black screen with a white cursor and keyboard issues

2011-04-22 Thread Bryce Harrington
Thanks for the photos. Yeah looks like the compiz process triggered a
page fault in the radeon drm module which caused a kernel OOPS.

IMG_0686 has the clearest call trace. I'll add that to the bug
description.

IMG_0689 shows the top of the oops report pretty clearly.

** Description changed:

  Binary package hint: xorg

I booted a LiveUSB of the current natty daily ISO. It got to the screen
where it asks whether I want to Try or Install Ubuntu. I selected "Try".
It switched back to the console, then loaded xorg with a cursor in the
center of the screen and a black background and stopped. I could move
the cursor around with my mouse, but Ctrl-Alt-F1 didn't do anything. I
eventually did Alt-Sysrq-R and Alt-Sysrq-K to restart xorg, logged in on
gdm, and got to a normal desktop.

[Bug 757141] Re: Xorg freeze: "Try Ubuntu" leads to black screen with a white cursor and keyboard issues

2011-04-20 Thread rww
Hi Bryce,

1. I took a break from testing for a few months, so I'm not sure whether
it's a regression. It didn't happen in maverick. The daily I used to
report this bug is the first one I'd used since Unity was released into
natty.

2&3. I re-booted the LiveUSB ten times using the April 20th daily from
http://cdimage.ubuntu.com/daily-live/current/ . Each time, I booted up,
clicked Try Ubuntu, observed the result, and then shut down the machine
either via the indicator (if Unity loaded), with Alt-SysRq-B and then a
poweroff when the BIOS came up (if the symptoms I mentioned above
happened), or with a poweroff if Alt-SysRq-B didn't work. Results:

 * Attempts 1, 4, 7, and 8 succeeded and loaded Unity properly.
 * Attempts 2, 6, and 10 stopped as described in the original report, with a
black screen and a movable mouse cursor. Alt-Sysrq-B worked.
 * On attempts 3 and 9, the monitor turned off. Alt-Sysrq-B did not have any
effect.
 * On attempt 5, I received a kernel panic (?). I will attach a .zip containing
photographs of the message. I apologize for the poor quality of some of the
images. There was a non-functional mouse cursor in the center of the screen.
Alt-Sysrq-B did not have any effect.

Thoughts: I have also installed natty to my computer and have been using
it for a couple of weeks. When selecting Unity, after login about 25% to
50% of the time, I get the Ubuntu background and a mouse cursor, but
Unity never loads. I suspect the same root cause as this bug, given the
similar symptoms. I have since switched to GNOME 3 from the (unofficial
and unsupported, I know) PPA, and it does not exhibit the same problems.
My suspicion is that this issue is being triggered by Unity and/or
Compiz using a codepath in the radeon driver that has a bug.

[Bug 757141] Re: Xorg freeze: "Try Ubuntu" leads to black screen with a white cursor and keyboard issues

2011-04-20 Thread Bryce Harrington
Hi rww, a few questions:

1. Is this a regression? You mentioned you saw it with the current
natty daily ISO. Have you been testing dailies previously without
encountering this problem? If so, what was the most recent day's ISO
prior to this one that did not show this problem?

2. Is this issue repeatable? Please re-try booting the LiveUSB
multiple times and note the number of times you encounter this bug, vs.
times you did not.

3. Have you tried other daily images since 4/10? Do they show the same
symptoms?

>From the symptoms it sort of sounds like perhaps X got loaded up before
some underlying drivers or services were ready. That seems odd. Is
there anything more you can tell me about the bug that might help shed
light on it?

** Changed in: xserver-xorg-video-ati (Ubuntu)
   Status: Confirmed => Incomplete

[Bug 757141] Re: Xorg freeze: "Try Ubuntu" leads to black screen with a white cursor and keyboard issues

2011-04-20 Thread Bryce Harrington
