[Bug 763156] Re: Cannot change functionality of the Super-Key

2011-05-04 Thread Šimánek
So Ubuntu is providing two separate interfaces for assigning
keybindings/shortcuts that do not overlap gracefully and this isn't
considered a bug? At the very least this should be a request for a
unified keybindings/shortcut manager. If they are going to use Compiz to
override the Gnome keyboard shortcuts then they should use it to replace
it entirely.

[Bug 763156] Re: Cannot change functionality of the Super-Key

2011-05-04 Thread Mohsin Falak
Hope this will help http://askubuntu.com/search?q=change+super+key
Moreover, i have changed the status of the bug so anyone with a keen approach
to the specific matter may help. The change in functionality of keyboard keys
must be provided by default. User must be able to change the layout of the keys
through System > Preferences > Keyboard.

[Bug 763156] Re: Cannot change functionality of the Super-Key

2011-05-03 Thread Šimánek
These features are fine. Ubuntu can set the default keybindings however
they see fit. But your response does not address the main point of my
bug ticket.

These settings should be set through the keybindings system that already
exists. Instead Ubuntu has apparently hard-coded these keybindings so
that they cannot be altered or disabled. I don't understand how this
approach can possibly benefit anyone. And, if Ubuntu decides that this
is how they are going to keep things, then they need to go in and change
all of the keyboard/keybinding options so that a user understands that
the Super-Key is now off-limits for customization.

It's an important bug either way and it's disappointing that this
important detail is considered invalid with so little consideration.

[Bug 763156] Re: Cannot change functionality of the Super-Key

2011-05-03 Thread Mohsin Falak
The Super-Key in Ubuntu (specially in the new Unity Interface) performs variety
of specific tasks like
1. Holding the Super-Key pops the Unity Launcher and let users to interact with
various icons by specifying numbers and alphabets as shortcuts.
2. Pressing the Super-Key (without holding) brings up the Dash to search and
open various applications and files etc.
3.Pressing Super-Key + D Shows the desktop.
These are some of the specific functions of the Super-Key which cannot be
replaced. Hope it helps, Thanks.

** Summary changed:

- Cannot change functionality of Win key
+ Cannot change functionality of the Super-Key

** Description changed:

  Binary package hint: unity

- I use the Win key to change my keyboard layout using third- (and fouth-)
- level keyboards like USA-Mac. For some reason Unity doesn't use the
- standard keybinding approach and interferes with my keyboard-switching
- via the Win keys. The only thing that my change in settings does is
- disable the Win key for activating the Unity launcher. Now the Win key
- does nothing.
