I am also suffering from this bug. Software Center and Update Manager initially worked but now exhibit these exact same symptoms. I can't pin down an exact change that may have caused this. Hi rlamsfuss, thanks for your bug report. Indeed it should not be necessary (nor is it recommended) to start software-center with sudo. Would you please open a terminal and start software-center normally (no sudo), and past the output here? That will help us to determine what is preventing startup on your machine.
