So I guess it may be that ath9k (at least for these specific devices listed here), can't properly *host* an IBSS (ad-hoc) network. Another Important fact (I just came across): When I change my laptops so that: HOST: Acer Aspire 4810, natty, has Ethernet access (Intel Wifi chip) CLIENT : Sony VAIO F13, natty (Atheros Wifi Chip) The ad-Hoc Network works flawlessly (reproduceable, without clicking Connect to hidden..). I can confirm that on EeePC 1001p and on Acer Aspire 5110 with Ubuntu 11.04 Natty. I create ad-hoc network on both laptops and nobody can't see anybody's network. Also networks not visible from smartphone. I create ad-hoc network on Acer Aspire 5110 with SSID qwert and trying to coonect to hidden network on 1001p. I can't see anything about IBSS on the client.
