Sorry I had to give up and go back to 10.10 so many things didn't work. The list of things - k3b, kate to name the first 2 things I tried which make the X server crash is just too long. Sorry I spoke too soon it's started crashing on the 173 version now. The card is a GeForce GTS 250 Also getting a problem from some GTK programs giving the message: g_dbus_connection_real_closed: Remote peer vanished with error: Underlying GIOStream returned 0 bytes on an async read (g-io-error- quark, 0). Exiting.
