Public bug reported: avr-libc 1.6.8 has been released on 2010-02-11 and it's the actual version in Ubuntu 11.04. In the meantime avr-libc 1.7.0 has been released on 2010-06-16 and avr-libc 1.7.1 has been released on 2011-02-16.
