[Bug 792767] Re: When typing an application's name in the Dash, there is no visual cue that focus is on the first item in the list

2013-12-31 Thread Xu Bin
It should be a design bug. Adding a default focus to the first candidate
while the UI focus is the input box isn't really technically easy to
implement. But it's absolutely necessary to implement that, when I use
gnome 3 shell to do application search the first candidate is focused by
default. For any developer who wants to fix this, gnome 3
implementation is a good start, I think.

Isn't this the same as Bug # 975950?

[Bug 792767] Re: When typing an application's name in the Dash, there is no visual cue that focus is on the first item in the list

2012-02-07 Thread John Lea
Marking this bug 'won't fix' because when a user is typing the focus is
on the search box. When they press the 'down' cursor key, the focus
then moves to the Category Header (not yet landed, but will be in Unity
by feature freeze). Pressing return to access the first search result
is a useful shortcut, but adding a default focus to the *second* row of
the Dash (category header is the first row) doesn't really work with
having a single canvas for focus based keyboard navigation where the
search box is the start point. This will be more apparent when all the
keyboard navigation improvements that andyrock is working on lands.

I also aggree with frederik.nnaji, this is certainly a bug - there's no
good reason why it shouldnt be highlighted and very good reasons why it
shoud be.

Hitting return and nothing happening is the expected behaviour if
nothing is highlighted, when the thing is highlighted by clicking down
and hitting return you get the expected behaviour of the app launching.

I agree to frederik.nnaji that this is a design bug.

I compare that to the Windows 7 start menu, where the first matching
item is selected and highlighted on search.

2012-01-13 Thread Jan Claeys
+1 on adding some indication that pressing enter will launch the first
application listed; the current situation (in oneiric at least) is
really confusing.

It would be good to not use exactly the same indication as when you
select it with the arrow keys though, because that would be confusing
too...

2011-10-25 Thread frederik.nnaji
i don't agree, imo this is a flaw i.e. a bug in how the dash works.
perhaps it's a design bug, interaction design that is.

if an item has focus, it should indicate that to the user.
the current behaviour is that the respective item does not indicate whether or
not it is focused, unless spacially navigated to via mouse or keyboard. This
makes interaction slower, uncertain.
