The same with me. Ubuntu 8.10 Intrepid (had it on Hardy too), Gnome 2.24.1, Rhythmbox 0.11.6 (Rhythmbox is closed) 1. I have mp3 file on desktop for example (it's not on Rhythmbox list) 2. I try to open it with Rhythmbox 3. Rhythmbox window appears, but the file isn't playing (it's on the list now) (Rhythmbox is opened, there is another song paused) 1,2 3. Rhythmbox window appears, paused song plays... (my song is added to the list) (Rhythmbox is opened, nothing is playing) 1,2 3. Rhythmbox window appears, random song starts to play (also song on the list) (Rhythmbox is opened) 1. The file I want to open is on the list 2. I try to open it with Rhythmbox 3. Rhythmbox window appears, my song is playing correctly. It seems, that opening file with Rhythmbox is trying to find the file on the list, 'clicks' Play, and then adds it to the list. Except when Rhythmbox closed - songs won't play at all until I hit Play myself. that bug is not clear, could you describe how you open a file in rhythmbox? double click from nautilus or something else? if you do open from nautilus, was that file already to your library before? Okay reading through the rhythmbox info and help. The only way you can create a playlist and therefore play the audio is by selecting a track from the library or audio source. Therefore the ability to play a track directly doesn't exist which is obviously why the gnome team use totem as the default player for audio. As a result of this research there is currently nothing that the Ubuntu team can do about this situation. My advice is to put your suggestion to the gnome team in charge of Rhythmbox directly. what version of Ubuntu do you use? Thanks for your response! I trust the non-free codecs packages have been installed? In case you didn't know, due to copyright and patent reasons, Ubuntu can't ship with any non-open multimedia codecs (software you need to play media files). As such, you need extra packaged to be able to playback patented formats like MP3. In this case, I suggest Automatix ( http://www.getautomatix.com/ ) to install the necessary decoders and a whole lot more. In case you already have the codecs installed (doesn't have to be through Automatix; it can be done manually), please let everyone know, so that we can think of some other way to help you. Your bug lacks information we would need to investigate further. For example, what type of file are you trying to open (is it an MP3, WAV, OGG, AVI, MPG)?
