First of all, don't do partial upgrades when running development releases.

I decided to test this again, after I originally found this error, one
week passed, since then another 200 packages were updates, some new
packages added, with the report that a partial upgrade was needed.  The
issue still acures, exactly the same as last time.  I go to choose the
session user defined.  after putting in password, it starts the loading
process, screen goes black, then a message window appears "unable to
load gnome, log out"

after pressing ok, I am logged back out and back to the login screen.
