Adding drm.debug=0xe to your kernel boot parameters would be useful, but I don't think required. My next theory is that the i915.ko failed to load in the pci=acpi case, and so the ddx found no kms support and did not initialise. Looking at the dmesg should confirm that and if so give the next clue. Could somebody report this to Intel developers? The mail sent to the kernel mailing list seems to have been missed. You can file a bug to the X.org bug tracker at https://bugs.freedesktop.org/enter_bug.cgi?product=xorg Feel free to paste a link to the mail, which has detailed information: http://markmail.org/message/msojtkj4o4klho3t?q=lkml+list:org.kernel.vger.linux-kernel If you don't do that, the bug will likely persist in 12.04, as it seems to be still present in kernel 3.2. ;-) ** Changed in: xserver-xorg-video-intel (Ubuntu) Status: In Progress => Confirmed -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/805700 Title: Natty&Oneiric - intel 82945G/GZ graphics card - Intel driver fails To manage notifications about this bug go to: https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/xserver-xorg-video-intel/+bug/805700/+subscriptions -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs

Great! I had the same problem (reported with bug report 902616) on the same Foxconn board, same intel graphic chip with intel atom 230 processor. The option "pci=noacpi" lets the problem disappear, miraculously. Of coursed, then I'm missing acpi -- maybe 12.04 will be able to solve that problem as well? -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/805700 Title: Natty&Oneiric - intel 82945G/GZ graphics card - Intel driver fails To manage notifications about this bug go to: https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/xserver-xorg-video-intel/+bug/805700/+subscriptions -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs
[Bug 805700] Re: Natty&Oneiric - intel 82945G/GZ graphics card - Intel driver fails
Dear all, We finally found a workaround : the grub option "pci=noacpi" allows to boot using intel driver ! I however have no idea to explain why it works... Here is the link that helped us : http://markmail.org/message/msojtkj4o4klho3t?q=lkml+list:org.kernel.vger.linux-kernel The problem seems to be closely linked not only to the graphics chipset, but also to this particular Foxconn mother board with an intel atom processor. I hope it helps. ** Description changed: + (see post #12 for a temporary solution) + Hi, When booting on a Natty live-USB on my computer, a gnome-panel like desktop is loaded instead of Unity. It seems to be related to a problem with the intel graphics driver : the Xorg.0.log tells "(EE)open /dev/fb0 No such file or directory" and then the vesa driver is used instead. If I create a xorg.conf file (by default there's nothing), with ' Driver "intel" ' in ' Section "Device" ', then restart X with "sudo service gdm restart", Xorg fails to load (No devices detected, Fatal server error:No screens found) and I see a command-line prompt (same result as when trying Ubuntu 10.10). If I do the same but with the line ' Driver "vesa" ', of course it works the same as without xorg.conf. Except that Xorg.0.log shows no error at all. Nevertheless, Ubuntu 10.04 works, with compiz effects activated ! The intel driver is OK in Xorg.0.log . Note that at first with 10.04 I had freezes, but they were corrected by installing compiz-fusion-icon, selecting the "indirect rendering" option, and making this change permanent. I can't say more. I'm not sure what package causes the problem. Sorry also for my bad english. Graphics card : Intel Corporation 82945G/GZ Integrated Graphics Controller (rev 02) I tried every option available when booting on the live-usb (nomodeset for instance). I also tried using another screen, which works with Ubuntu 11.04 on another computer. Same problem. xserver-xorg-video-intel: Installed : 2:2.14.0-4ubuntu7 xorg: Installed : 1:7.6+4ubuntu3 I hope it will help, thanks for your attention ! Hello I'm a friend of Ghislain Bugnicourt, and after a few tests here is what we understood : While reading BootDmesg.txt [8.246609] [drm:init_ring_common] *ERROR* failed to set render ring head to zero ctl head tail start [8.246624] [drm:init_ring_common] *ERROR* render ring initialization failed ctl head tail start [8.246736] [drm:i915_driver_load] *ERROR* failed to init modeset [8.285242] i915 :00:02.0: PCI INT A disabled [8.285266] i915: probe of :00:02.0 failed with error -5 it seems to me that : - i915 fails to load with KMS (Kernel Mode Setting), but somehow i915 is not unloaded - so for Xorg the "intel" driver does not work, it fallbacks to "vesa" If modesetting is the culprit why not deactivate it ? - the workaround to deactivate the modesetting through the start option i915.modeset=0, removes the errors in dmesg - But since recent Xorg requires modesetting, Xorg then fails to start I think is that: - the bug is either related to the BIOS or drm or i915 - at this point we should make a bug report on freedesktop ( http://intellinuxgraphics.org/how_to_report_bug.html ) FYI: similar bug on bugzilla https://bugzilla.redhat.com/show_bug.cgi?id=727455 PS: the kernel module "intelfb" does work. ** Bug watch added: Red Hat Bugzilla #727455 https://bugzilla.redhat.com/show_bug.cgi?id=727455 -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/805700 Title: Natty&Oneiric - intel 82945G/GZ graphics card - Intel driver fails To manage notifications about this bug go to: https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/xserver-xorg-video-intel/+bug/805700/+subscriptions -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs
[Bug 805700] Re: Natty&Oneiric - intel 82945G/GZ graphics card - Intel driver fails
Dear all, Sorry for the double post : I'm not used to this damned mac keyboard ! As I was saying, I had already tried to add the "HorizSync" and "VertRefresh" options in xorg.conf and it didn't change anything. I also installed "mesa-utils" (after installing Ubuntu 11.10 because I didn't find out how to test this solution on live USB), and it didn't change anything after a reboot or "compiz --replace" or "unity --replace" or even "sudo service lightdm restart". It seems that Arl hasn't got the same card as mine anyway : 945G and not 82945G/GZ. They're different I guess. As well as the one in the eeepc ? The problem is still here : let's try to find the solution ! :) Thanks for the help, Ghis ** Changed in: xserver-xorg-video-intel (Ubuntu) Status: Fix Released => In Progress -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/805700 Title: Natty&Oneiric - intel 82945G/GZ graphics card - Intel driver fails To manage notifications about this bug go to: https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/xserver-xorg-video-intel/+bug/805700/+subscriptions -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs

I got it working by: 1. sudo apt-get install mesa-util 2. in a terminal try it with compiz --replace 3. after the reboot, try it with ubuntu (it was set to ubuntu2d) I do however, have an similair problem with an eeepc 900, which is not yet fixed. mesa-util was allready installed ;-( -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/805700 Title: Natty&Oneiric - intel 82945G/GZ graphics card - Intel driver fails To manage notifications about this bug go to: https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/xserver-xorg-video-intel/+bug/805700/+subscriptions -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs

@jose, I tried it with your instructions, but some remarks: 1. should this also allow this, then for desktop effects to be enabled? 2. I think the correct command for step 2 is sudo X -configure :1 with configure only I got errors 3. I had now old xorg.conf, and typing now, also without xorg.conf 4. With your step 4, should that be, in monitor0 section? find attached some logs xorg.conf as I created it dmesg output and startx output, with the not working setup -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/805700 Title: Natty&Oneiric - intel 82945G/GZ graphics card - Intel driver fails To manage notifications about this bug go to: https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/xserver-xorg-video-intel/+bug/805700/+subscriptions -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs
[Bug 805700] Re: Natty&Oneiric - intel 82945G/GZ graphics card - Intel driver fails
Hi there. This is a VERY common problem with Intel chipsets and video cards. I have been posting some steps in different questions in the answer tracker, and those usually work to solve the problem. Here they are: 1.- Search the values of HorizSync and VertRefresh of your monitor. 2.- Open a terminal and type "sudo X configure :1" without quotes. This will create a new xorg.conf file. 3.- In the same terminal, type "gksu gedit xorg.conf.new" without quotes. This will open a text editor with the file that you have just created in there. 4.- You will see that it is divided in sections. Search for the Monitor section, and before the EndSection line of that section, add this two lines, without quotes: "HorizSync 30.0 - 81.0 VertRefresh 56.0 - 75.0" 5.- Replace the values in there with the values found in step 1. 6.- Save and close the file. If you want to, you can put it into a pastebin so I can check it before you move. If you do not want to, then move on to the next step. 7.- In a terminal, type "sudo mv xorg.conf.new /etc/X11/xorg.conf" without quotes. This will move the file to its correct position. 8.- Restart the PC. In case it does NOT works, copy this command into a paper: "sudo rm /etc/X11/xorg.conf", and boot into text mode, to enter this command without quotes and remove the file. If it works, please ignore this step. ** Changed in: xserver-xorg-video-intel (Ubuntu) Status: Incomplete => Fix Released -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/805700 Title: Natty&Oneiric - intel 82945G/GZ graphics card - Intel driver fails To manage notifications about this bug go to: https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/xserver-xorg-video-intel/+bug/805700/+subscriptions -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs
[Bug 805700] Re: Natty&Oneiric - intel 82945G/GZ graphics card - Intel driver fails
Hi, I already changed the title of this bug : same problem with Oneiric, except that Unity 3D works, but still with the vesa driver and not with intel, resulting in poor video settings (bad ratio aspect, "unknown" screen, desktop spreading out of the screen). I'm still forced to use ubuntu 10.04. -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/805700 Title: Natty&Oneiric - intel 82945G/GZ graphics card - Intel driver fails To manage notifications about this bug go to: https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/xserver-xorg-video-intel/+bug/805700/+subscriptions -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs
[Bug 805700] Re: Natty&Oneiric - intel 82945G/GZ graphics card - Intel driver fails
Hey ghislain-bugnicourt, You filed this bug report against natty, but I see it's still open and doesn't appear to have much activity recently. So, now that oneiric is released and stable, this may be a good point for you to upgrade and re-test if this issue is still present there. If it's solved in the new release and you think it's worth backporting the fix, please indicate that. Or if having the fix in the new release is good enough, feel free to close out the bug (or let us know and we'll close it.) If it's not solved, leave the bug report open. I can't promise we'll get to it (we get way more bugs filed than we can usually get to), but your testing and feedback can help out if and when we do. ** Changed in: xserver-xorg-video-intel (Ubuntu) Status: New => Incomplete -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/805700 Title: Natty&Oneiric - intel 82945G/GZ graphics card - Intel driver fails To manage notifications about this bug go to: https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/xserver-xorg-video-intel/+bug/805700/+subscriptions -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs
