update:

i tried the Feisty Herd 5 and the problem is still there.

however, i did manage to install the system just fine using the alternate CD on 
advanced mode (didn't try on normal mode...). 
i'm posting this from Feisty and it's working fine, apparently.

so, i guess the problem is with the Live CD...

Please include the following additional information, if you have not already 
done so (please pay attention to lspci's additional options), as required by 
the Ubuntu Kernel Team:
1. Please include the output of the command "uname -a" in your next response. 
It should be one, long line of text which includes the exact kernel version 
you're running, as well as the CPU architecture.
2. Please run the command "dmesg > dmesg.log" and attach the resulting file 
"dmesg.log" to this bug report.
3. Please run the command "lspci -vvnn > lspci-vvnn.log" and attach the

i'm having the same problem with feisty herd 4. 
can't install because feisty doesn't detect my hard disk.

'noapic' didn't help...

i have a SATA drive, by the way. what other info with be helpful?

I had the same problem.  As a workaround, try adding "noapic" to the
boot options.  This made the cursor lag but the hard disk was detected
correctly.

More information about the bug. 
I restarted the computer changing the hard disk from port (SATA On-the-Go) to 
the Internal SATA 3.0 Gb/s port.
But on Feisty Herd 1 the hard disk was detected on both ports.
