Here is some ideas: 1. Show a popup beside the launcher at the first start after the installation that encourages the user to click it. 2. Use an attractive color combination of the button for make it stand out from the other buttons. 3. I’d also think that indicators should highlight when on mouse hover. For example, take a look at Opera menu bar. Its menu bar use Ambiance (or current) theme, and menus are highlighted when on mouse hover. Also the indicators should have this feature. I think this is a serious lack from Canonical, because the user experience is very compromised.
