Hello,
One problem with the Python-pip package is the file at /usr/bin/pip is from 
the package for Perl Installation Program . So the file pip has nothing to 
do with python.  
Both packages have conflicting assumptions.  The executable name pip is 
already taken.  Why not name the installed binary python-pip ?

However, I'm not sure why the software updater presumed it should update
the pip program.

Just had this bug on Ubuntu 10.04 (don't know if it's fixed on later Ubuntu 
versions).
