I'm using latest Feisty Fawn, all updates installed. And I have a i386 System, non the less I am experiencing nearly the same problem! If started from console, I also get the Timeout message. note ! as of febuary 16 ,2007 AM updates the gkdesklets in synaptic is still not working.
