aptitude full-upgrade and the icons have disappeared - xchat now uses the unity launcher bar on the side to notify the user of something, rather than at the top. Empathy also appears to be properly now in the messaging status bar. thanks for the bug report. Please make sure you are using the latest version of Unity and if the problem still happens can you attach a videocast of the problem to this bug report. I should clarify that the icons disappear when the cursor exists the top bar, not when the cursor enters the top bar.
