[Bug 844302] Re: the searchbar shouldn't vanish after clicking on the more info button in software center (gtk3)

2011-09-23 Thread zsolt . ruszinyƔk
hmm, I see the point, Matthew, but what if it just searched the last
cathegory you were in (or the whole list if there was none specified)?
that is the most likely place you may want to search in...

I really agree with you, that it would be a little messup, if the
searchbar whas this multifuncional, but if you try to look at it from
the perspective of a normal user who is not bothered by this, it feels
annoying for him that the searchabar keeps vanishing and he is less
concerned about what it will search through, because he will be notified
anyway if he is searching through a cathegory and not the whole list.

but that is my opinion, you may disagree, of course

[Bug 844302] Re: the searchbar shouldn't vanish after clicking on the more info button in software center (gtk3)

2011-09-20 Thread Matthew Paul Thomas
zsolt, the reason I specified that the software item screen should not
have a search field is that it wouldn't be obvious what the scope was.
For example, let's say there was a maths game called Arithmetica in
the Games Board Games subcategory. If the Arithmetica screen had a
search field, what should it search? Just the text of that screen? Or
the Board Games subcategory? Or the Games category? Or all software?

It would get even more confusing if the program was in two categories,
as some are. For example, if Arithmetica was in the Science
Engineering Mathematics subcategory as well, then what the search
field did in the Arithmetica screen could be different depending on how
you'd got there, which would be pretty weird.

I'd be happy for the software item screen to have a search field if
there was a way to make it obvious what the field did. But I just don't
see a way to do that.

(BTW Robert, thanks as always for the triage, but we avoid the Opinion
status for Ubuntu Software Center. It tends to be more confusing than
useful.)

[Bug 844302] Re: the searchbar shouldn't vanish after clicking on the more info button in software center (gtk3)

2011-09-15 Thread Robert Roth
The Software center specification explicitly specifies[1] that the
software item screen is not searchable by design, so I guess this should
be set to as Opinion.
