Yeah, if I turn off compositor effects in Metacity, then the shadows
disappear entirely

Ah, right, that's probably because I turned on compositor effects in
Metacity, so I get the window shadows. Is there any way to have this
without the panel shadow? I find it quite difficult to see window edges
with our theme when there are windows stacked on top of each other
without shadows.

Thanks for the report Chris. In Unity 2D, the shadows have been deactivated. If 
they appear, then that's a bug.
Do you think you could provide a screenshot of when it happens? Also the output 
of ps aux would be genius!
