Private bug reported: DESCRIPTION
This is a Canonical Support escalation according to processes defined in: https://wiki.canonical.com/CorporateServices/GSS/TechnicalSupport/SupportDistroEscalation Assigned escalation priority: MEDIUM QA Team response deadline: Sep 21, 16:00 UTC+2 Overview: When triggering the kdump functionality to capture a vmcore on Natty (and Oneiric), the capture of the vmcore by the 0_kdump script fails and only leaves a vmcore.log file containing the following : /root/usr/bin/makedumpfile: error while loading shared libraries: libdw.so.1: cannot open shared object file: No such file or directory Reproducible: 100% - Install Natty without using LVM (otherwise, this will use a separate /boot partition which will mask the problem with another bug : LP#828742) - Install the linux-crashdump meta-package and dependancies - Modify /etc/grub.d/10_linux to increase the reserved memory to 128Mb with the following statement : crashkernel=384M-2G:128M,2G-:128M - Trigger a crashdump from the root account with # echo c > /proc/sysrq-trigger Workaround: Use Maverick or Lucid that do have a statically built makedumpfile Business concern: This situation renders the kdump functionality unusable and will cause problems when customer encounter panics that they want to have analyzed. Request: Include a dependancy to makedumpfile-static in the linux-crashdump meta- package and fix the 0_kdump script to invoke the statically built makedumpfile that is loaded in the initramfs Public bug : https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/kexec-tools/+bug/785425 REF: 500D000000FbMmc PUB: 785425 ** Affects: makedumpfile (Ubuntu) Importance: Undecided Status: New ** Tags: customersupport ** This bug is no longer flagged as a security vulnerability -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to the bug report. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/851945 Title: P3:[Natty]:makedumpfile is only available as shared library which breaks kdump functionality To manage notifications about this bug go to: https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/makedumpfile/+bug/851945/+subscriptions -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs
