I'm closing this as fixed, since the original problem seems to be fixed. "vesa" is working for me on i845 in IBM ThinkCentre and i830 in IBM Thinkpad R31. At one point I went back a couple releases getting "vesa" failures on the i830. Recently on karmic there was a "vesa" change I think, developers would know, and now it is working for me. For what I do as an "ordinary user", internet email, internet browsing, internet flash video, internet shopping, printing internet articles including graphics, word processing, spreadsheets, digital photo editing & printing, what did I forget, "vesa" works fine. I don't do games. Since karmic debug time is running short I'd vote for "blacklisting" i830 and i845 from the current defaults which don't work for me, to "nomodeset" and "vesa" which do work (unless some update does some damage). Much the same thing was (is?) done on jaunty blacklisting "compiz" on pc's with these chips. This ATI radeon Xpress 200 defaults to nomodeset as it is. I've been posting bugs on the intel driver for karmic, for example: Launchpad Bug #420594 [i845] xorg hang video driver 2.8.1-1ubuntu1 Bug #406460 preceded that, and bugzilla Bug 23032, and Bug 20206. The last karmic that would boot on i845 was A2, unless "nomodeset" and Driver "vesa" are specified. Yes, I've tried splash or not, quiet or not, recovery mode or not, most on i845 however I've reported bugs on the older IBM Thinkpad R31 with intel i830 video which are similar in symptoms to the user. We should really fix the driver for your card so you don't have to use the vesa driver. Can you please file a new bug with "ubuntu-bug xserver- xorg-video-intel"? Safe graphics mode = vesa. Does the vesa driver restart without blanking the screen? Not an issue with 9.04 or 9.10 because they don't have a "safe graphics" mode. I wish they did, since the only way karmic is running on this PC is by booting in recovery mode and manually entering a xorg.conf to include Driver "vesa" which then works, in nomodeset of course.
