Maybe the Open Calendar link should not appear when there is NO default calendar selected. If that link only works with Evolution, it should then appear only if Evolution has been chosen as the default calendar. I have this problem too! Gnome Shell needs a good calendar application. Also, Google Calendar integration would be sweet.
