upstream closed the bug with this comment: "I cannot reproduce this on nautilus 3.6. It works as expected: custom icons set on the target folder subfolders are shown when I open the symlink. It's worth noting that nautilus now opens the target path when a symlink is double-clicked. There have been many changes in Ubuntu since that time you reported the bug and your problem may have been fixed with some of the updates. It would help us a lot if you could test it on a currently supported Ubuntu version.
