[Bug 87101] Re: when opening an attachment, it should be written to tmp as a read-only file
We have the same problem with informations like a memo or other stuff that only needs to be in a mail attachment and not stored permanently on disk. Is there not a possibility to integrate this feature in the advanced configuration editor as attachment.readonly true or false so if the sysadmin has this support request, you can turn the readonly flag to false? This would be a great addition and would facilitate the editing and answering of memos and other company related stuff that just needs to be edited in the attached file and sent back to the sender. -- when opening an attachment, it should be written to tmp as a read-only file https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/87101 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs
[Bug 87101] Re: when opening an attachment, it should be written to tmp as a read-only file
This behavior I did not expect either: I opened an attachment from an e-mail, renamed it (making sure not to overwrite the original), saved it, but did not realize I saved it with the original file in tmp / as a tmp file. So after multiple saves, I closed Thunderbird (2.0.0.17, Ubuntu) only to find that without warning, now the file has been flushed forever...
My Thunderbird (Windows XP, Version 2.0.0.14 (20080421) does even worse, it DELETES the temp-file on exit. At least it could have done a little date-check or something. My changes are completely lost, not even a deleted file recovery could bring it back. I do find saved documents, I don't clear a temp-folder automatically and I don't lose correctly saved files. It's a bit of unexpected behaviour to delete those files even if they are modified. [Bug 87101] Re: when opening an attachment, it should be written to tmp as a read-only file
I agree with pvilela: this is not a bug, it is actually a feature! If I open a spreadsheet and I want to tweak the formulas, I must first save it; actually it is not as simple as pressing the save button, because I actually have to "save as..." it, name it, then save it. All of that, even if I don't want to keep it at all. If I open a text document and I want to modify the text and print it, I must do the exact same thing, even if I don't want to keep it. The same thing has happened with Thunderbird: all attachments now open as read-only files in the respective applications. Very annoying.
Well, to me the fix is a bug. I liked the way it worked. I used to edit the ODF attachments and save them else when needed.. Now instead of edit-save I have to save-edit-save. But worse than that, in 8.04 I get the following behaviour: OpenOffice.org keeps opening the file, and opening, and opening, and does not let me save it elsewhere -- when opening an attachment, it should be written to tmp as a read-only file https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/87101 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs

[Bug 87101] Re: when opening an attachment, it should be written to tmp as a read-only file
tdn: because that's the correct place to store temporary files, hence its name. On a more general note - Launchpad is showing this as Fix Released upstream, which is incorrect. Upstream have committed a fix to trunk, so it will be fixed if TB3 is ever released, but there is no indication of fixing it in TB2, so at best it should be Fix Committed. Can we backport the fix to the version of TB in Ubuntu? Waiting for upstream on this is clearly going to take some time and it would be really really awesome if our next LTS didn't suffer from this really annoying issue that only ever bites inexperienced users and causes them significant frustration. -- when opening an attachment, it should be written to tmp as a read-only file https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/87101 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is the bug contact for Ubuntu. -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs

[Bug 87101] Re: when opening an attachment, it should be written to tmp as a read-only file
Chris, Magnus, you can follow the progress of this *enhancement* at [1] ("should open attachments readonly mode - changes to attachment are lost if user does not a explicit "save as...""). This behavior seems not to affect only TB but also any other mozilla derivate. However all the requests about changing this thunderbird behavior are marked as dup of the above bug at bugzilla (e.g. [2] "Thunderbird Bug: Save attachments as read-only when opened"). There is a proposed patch dated from 2007-02-04. [Bug 87101] Re: when opening an attachment, it should be written to tmp as a read-only file
Saving temporary files elsewhere just relocates the problem - users still won't know where they've saved the file. Preventing edited files in /tmp/being deleted is (afaik) impossible because you can't easily distinguish them from regular temporary files that should be deleted. Preventing users saving files in /tmp/ sounds like a world of pain. Making firefox/thunderbird save such files as read-only ensures correct and unsurprising behaviour - the files are temporary and will be cleaned up on reboot (or earlier) and the users can't edit them in-place. -- when opening an attachment, it should be written to tmp as a read-only file https://launchpad.net/bugs/87101 -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs
