I don't know if this is related but during the installation of ubuntu 11.10 
(32bits) I saw the following message:
locale.setlocale failed: unsupported locale setting (LANG=pt_BR)

Try:

1. Edit /var/lib/locales/supported.d/local

  Add (or not):

  pt_BR UTF-8

2. Edit /etc/default/locale:

  Add (or change):

  LANG=pt_BR.UTF-8

3. Execute:

 sudo locale-gen -purge

 and

 sudo dpkg-reconfigure locales

Restart... and done!

In my Desktop.. everything Ok, after this modifications!
