[Bug 876825] Re: freeze during external hdd access through pcmcia/usb adapter
The laptop on which I had this issue is dead by now, can't boot up any more. So I can't test it more to decide if it was a hardware or a software problem. So I think this bug should be closed, or something like that. -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/876825 Title: freeze during external hdd access through pcmcia/usb adapter To manage notifications about this bug go to: https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/linux/+bug/876825/+subscriptions -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs
[Bug 876825] Re: freeze during external hdd access through pcmcia/usb adapter
When I first faced this problem, did some copy attempt to determine what an cause the problem. During theese test, Thunar seemed to be completely unuseable, it instantly freezed if I tryed to reach data from Usb device connented to the NEC PCMCIA card. However On other USB 1.1 motherboard ports with the same USB data device worked fine. And krusader worked better first I could read 50 Mb data, then freezed. After reboot could read ~250 Mb with krusader, then freeze reboot ~1 Gb freeze - reboot ~3 Gb freeze reboot ~3 Gb freeze reboot At this point I made the bug report. And now the new tests come: So today I installed the rc10 mainline kernel. While testing it krusader seemed to be working great, but thunar could not read 1 Mb of data without freezeing the mounted device. I booted back to the stack kernel and krusader worked also fine. I made some boot alternating kernel versions and krusader worked fine, and druing the test Thunar also started working with booth kernels. I could copy 3 Gb data with Thunar without problems. So everything seemed to be working like in tales. But once I was started a test copy, and did not want to continue, so cancelled, then the mounting freezed, and after reboot I couldn't even read a bigger directory using neither Thunar and krusader. Sounds to be a hardware problem, isn't? But after I booted Xp the USB devices started working again through the NEC. (I booted Xp 2 times, because the first time there was some freeze - perhaps about the PCMICA. But after the second Xp boot I could send Gb's of data send through the card.) And again when I booted to linux stack kernel, krusader could copy 180 Mb data, before freeze. So what is it? Have you ever hear a story like this? Can linux remember that It had some affair with the card? Or can the card remeber it? Or how??? ** Tags removed: needs-upstream-testing -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/876825 Title: freeze during external hdd access through pcmcia/usb adapter To manage notifications about this bug go to: https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/linux/+bug/876825/+subscriptions -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs

[Bug 876825] Re: freeze during external hdd access through pcmcia/usb adapter
Would it be possible for you to test the latest upstream kernel? It will allow additional upstream developers to examine the issue. Refer to https://wiki.ubuntu.com/KernelMainlineBuilds . Please test the release candidate kernel versus the daily build. Once you've tested the upstream kernel, please remove the 'needs-upstream-testing' tag. This can be done by clicking on the yellow pencil icon next to the tag located at the bottom of the bug description and deleting the 'needs- upstream-testing' text. Please let us know your results. Thanks in advance. ** Tags added: needs-upstream-testing -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/876825 Title: freeze during external hdd access through pcmcia/usb adapter To manage notifications about this bug go to: https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/linux/+bug/876825/+subscriptions -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs
[Bug 876825] Re: freeze during external hdd access through pcmcia/usb adapter
Ok, I try to do it tomorrow! So I should install and try this: http://kernel.ubuntu.com/~kernel-ppa/mainline/v3.1-rc9-oneiric/ and this: http://kernel.ubuntu.com/~kernel-ppa/mainline/daily/current/ ? Thanks ** Description changed: My Fujitsu-siemens laptop don't have USB 2.0 that's why I use the HDD through this card. All the stuff work great under WinXp (I have dual-boot) Also if I use it from the motherboard's usb 1.1 port, then no problems occour. Although the HDD is rekognized and automounted well through the adapter, while I use it (copy files, view pictures etc.) the programs trying to reach data will freeze time to time. This bug seems to be related to the NEC chipset of the adapter, as the following similarities suggests: - Bug #234084 -and + Bug #234084 + and http://ubuntuforums.org/archive/index.php/t-1585855.html ProblemType: Bug DistroRelease: Ubuntu 11.10 Package: linux-image-3.0.0-12-generic 3.0.0-12.20 ProcVersionSignature: Ubuntu 3.0.0-12.20-generic 3.0.4 Uname: Linux 3.0.0-12-generic i686 AlsaVersion: Advanced Linux Sound Architecture Driver Version 1.0.24.
