phil uzzo, could you please confirm this issue exists with the latest
development release of Ubuntu? ISO images are available from

could you please run the following command in the development release
from a terminal, as it will automatically gather and attach updated

disappears while using Gnome Shell however, Gnome shell has its own

[Bug 877789] Re: Choppy Audio After Upgrade To 11.10

2011-12-01 Thread Xarijus
I can reproduce the same choppy audio as others, however in a different
way. Bug occurs whenever I try to balance my audio output via audio
settings found in gnome-control-center. If I balance audio output to
either very far left or right the choppiness occurs. Sound seems to be
slowed down like on a cassette player running out of battery.

I use MSI Wind U100 netbook with Pinguyos 11.10 installed (which uses gnome
shell)
Kernel 3.0.0-13-generic

I have the same choppy sound problem but on Kubuntu. It showed up after
upgrade from Kubuntu 10.10 to 11.04 and is still present in 11.10. The
machine is IBM ThinkPad T60 with ATI X1400.

I think this is result of bug

I tried what you suggested, Jonathan, and while it allowed me to gather
info and submit a bug report, it still did not fix the issue :(

The "ubuntu-bug" command is a good one to keep in my toolbox, though,
for any other issues I experience!

I wouldn't call it a fix but a good get around for now!!

open shell command and run ubuntu-bug

This only keeps the sound working until the next reboot but fixes it all
the same!!

[Bug 877789] Re: Choppy Audio After Upgrade To 11.10

2011-11-09 Thread Clint Smith
I have been having the same symptoms Cristian described. I upgraded
from Ubuntu 11.04 to 11.10 on a Dell Latitude E6520 (dual-boot with
Windows 7 Enterprise). At first audio and video were fine, but now I
get no audio, and video skips in "hiccups" every few seconds. All
multimedia exhibits these symptoms, not just Flash. It did not coincide
with any system updates that I recall.

I have tried several workarounds/fixes recommended online, but none have
had any apparent effect. I certainly look forward to a working patch
for this :)

[Bug 877789] Re: Choppy Audio After Upgrade To 11.10

2011-11-04 Thread Cristian Arezzini
I just noticed that if I'm watching for example a Youtube video, with my
ExpressCard sound card plugged out, then the video is perfectly fluid (but of
course with no sound); then as soon as I plug the card in, and the system
starts streaming audio to it, then the video too gets really choppy - it runs
for at most half a second between "hiccups".
This makes the whole system pretty much unusable for anything
multimedia-related.

I found that one somewhere and tried it myself before I reported the bug, it

2011-11-04 Thread Jason E.
Another workaround is in /etc/pulse/default.pa is to add tsched=0 to the
line

 load-module module-udev-detect

so that it looks like this

 load-module module-udev-detect tsched=0

This disables time-scheduling and causes the popping to disappear. This
bug may also be related to the wireless card causing the kernel to crash
according to https://bugs.freedesktop.org/show_bug.cgi?id=28106

[Bug 877789] Re: Choppy Audio After Upgrade To 11.10

2011-11-03 Thread Jason E.
I can confirm that it also affects ATI/Radeon users as well. Playing
audio of any kind, whether from Firefox, Banshee or Totem the audio is
quite choppy. It does not appear that CPU load is a contributing factor.
What is a contributing factor is keystrokes and mouse movements. A pop
can be heard for each keystroke or mouse movement. If I hold down a key
or drag my mouse across the screen the audio chopps. It definitely
appears to be an issue within xservers or its driver sets as I installed
fglrx, AMD's proprietary graphics driver, and the problem disappeared.
Upon removal of fglrx the problem returned. Also I should add that I did
not experience this issue in Natty.

[Bug 877789] Re: Choppy Audio After Upgrade To 11.10

2011-10-27 Thread Cristian Arezzini
Affects me too. Extremely choppy audio, even plain standard mp3's.
This is 11.10, upgraded from 11.04. Soundcard is an ExpressCard "SoundBlaster
X-Fi Xtreme Audio Notebook".
Sound is unusable as it is, hope it's fixed...

[Bug 877789] Re: Choppy Audio After Upgrade To 11.10

2011-10-20 Thread William F. Zwick
My specific issue was audio that is very very short chops that are more
noticable in audio.

I also have other issues that may be related. The sound card would
"disappear" from my Banshee after plugging in an USB headset. The USB
headsets would also be unusable.

I did a "clean" install on a dual boot machine. (XP Pro the other OS)

Sorry for any missing information. I am a complete noob at reporting
bugs... and Linux in general.
