*** This bug is a duplicate of bug 871283 *** https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/871283 From your symptoms, it seems you may have no nautilus root window, i.e., either your nautilus crashed or you changed the option for showing desktop items (perhaps through dconf key - search for desktop-background-show desktop icons). I have noticed that, and also access to the dash is very unresponsive in that case (that is, when no window has focus, since there's no 'background' nautilus to swtch the focus after minimizing or closing a window).
