[Bug 887445] Re: I can not login
I see some messages from bum but also this ^[[B^[[B^[[B^[[B^[[B^[[B^[[B^[[B^[[B^[[B^[[B^[[B^[[B^[[B^[[B That doesn't seem right to me. (What can cause this?) That could certainly be related to the console being in the wrong state. I guess I'll have to look elsewhere to find why those scripts are behaving this way since it's not really an ubuntu specific issue. I can add though that the scripts did not cause any problems in 11.04. This could be caused /etc/init/rc.conf having 'console output' in 11.10, which allows init scripts to interact with the console. But init scripts *should* limit their interaction to sending output. You could try redirecting input and output to /dev/null within the script, to see if this fixes the problem. Anyway, closing this bug report as invalid. Thanks for following up. ** Changed in: xserver-xorg-video-ati (Ubuntu) Status: Incomplete = Invalid -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/887445 Title: I can not login To manage notifications about this bug go to: https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/xserver-xorg-video-ati/+bug/887445/+subscriptions -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs
[Bug 887445] Re: I can not login
This error is in general caused by some other software setting the console in an incorrect state. It's not an X bug, but a bug in something else which has changed X's console underneath it. Did you install any extra packages besides the defaults when installing this system? Can you provide a package list from the system ('dpkg -l | grep ^ii') ? -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/887445 Title: I can not login To manage notifications about this bug go to: https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/xserver-xorg-video-ati/+bug/887445/+subscriptions -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs
[Bug 887445] Re: I can not login
I've added some extra packages after the install. [Bug 887445] Re: I can not login
You have a significant number of server packages installed. It is likely that one or more of these is handling the console inappropriately at boot time. cloud-init monit mysql-server-5.1 postgresql-common tomcat6 I recommend that you try disabling each of these services in turn and reboot after disabling each one, to see if one of these is the culprit.
Thank you Steve for the suggestion. Now I've tried (and also removed cloud-init) and I found no problem, except for a service that I've written myself. When running a konsole in X and then giving the command sudo bum and starting the service, I see some messages from bum but also this ^[[B^[[B^[[B^[[B^[[B^[[B^[[B^[[B^[[B^[[B^[[B^[[B^[[B^[[B^[[B That doesn't seem right to me. (What can cause this?) With limited testing it seems that this is the problem. The service I start is a very basic bashscript that starts php programs. I guess I'll have to look elsewhere to find why those scripts are behaving this way since it's not really an ubuntu specific issue. I can add though that the scripts did not cause any problems in 11.04.

This seems to be the same problem as bug 532047. So the problem is not really fixed? I've done: sudo mv /etc/init/plymouth-splash.conf /etc/init/plymouth-splash.conf.disabled and added the line vt=7 to /etc/lightdm/lightdm.conf as below. [SeatDefaults] greeter-session=unity-greeter user-session=ubuntu vt=7 The login now crashes when I press 2 (ENTER seems to crash it only some of the times ) but ENTER crashes it if I open a terminal window in X and press ENTER in that. Pressing 2 after login also crashes X.
Oh, I should add that I started out with having the same problem with the login when I used the binary drivers. I then tried to remove them, but no success, the same error that is reported in this bug. -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/887445 Title: I can not login To manage notifications about this bug go to: https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+bug/887445/+subscriptions -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs
