[Bug 888477] Re: [Firmware Bug]: ACPI: BIOS _OSI(Linux) query ignored

2011-11-11 Thread Seth Forshee
This doesn't signify any problem with Ubuntu or with the Linux kernel.
What the message indicates is that your BIOS is querying the operating
system to see whether or not Linux is running, and Linux is ignoring
this query. The reason for this is that often a BIOS will offer a
limited feature set to the operating system when it responds that it is
Linux. Linux generally supports all the same features as Windows, so
Linux developers consider this query to be a bug in the firmware and
instead report that the operating system is Windows so that the full set
of features for the machine will be available. The message can be safely
ignored.

Since the message doesn't represent any problem with the Linux kernel,
I'm closing this bug as Invalid.

[Bug 888477] Re: [Firmware Bug]: ACPI: BIOS _OSI(Linux) query ignored

2011-11-10 Thread Joseph Salisbury
Do you know if this issue happened in previous version of Ubuntu, or is
this a new issue?

Would it be possible for you to test the latest upstream kernel? It
will allow additional upstream developers to examine the issue. Refer to
https://wiki.ubuntu.com/KernelMainlineBuilds . If possible, please test
the latest v3.2-rcN kernel (Not a kernel in the daily directory). Once
you've tested the upstream kernel, please remove the 'needs-upstream-
testing' tag(Only that one tag, please leave the others). This can be
done by clicking on the yellow pencil icon next to the tag located at
the bottom of the bug description and deleting the 'needs-upstream-
testing' text.

If this bug is fixed by the mainline kernel, please add the following
tag 'kernel-fixed-upstream-KERNEL-VERSION'. For example, if kernel
version 3.2-rc1 fixed and issue, the tag would be: 'kernel-fixed-
upstream-v3.2-rc1'.

If the mainline kernel does not fix this bug, please add the tag:
'kernel-bug-exists-upstream'.

Thanks in advance.

2011-11-10 Thread Timothy Mayoh
I have a feeling this issue is not caused by Linux, can you please try
contacting your computer's motherboard manufacturer as it is likely an
issue with firmware they provide. Perhaps after this you could detail us
with their response?

Thanks,
Timothy
