It's really not supposed to do that, and I can't make out from the code where it might be doing that; it's supposed to remove only a limited set of directories it specifically knows about. It was most certainly called /backup2, in the hopes of avoiding this exact issue and to avoid interaction with any important directories. Unfortunately it's been a long time and I was too flustered trying to recover my data to think of retaining the log.
