Hello, I am running a Toshiba Satellite L775-S7108 Laptop using the AMD64 Ubuntu 12.04 LTS. I am also unable to shut down via the Terminal using the normal shutdown command or the suggested (gnome-session-quit --power-off) in my question. And the GUI dialogs for shutdown are the same. My laptop only restarts. I may have found a fix. I did the sleep/hibernate fix and the keyboard/touchpad fixes found https://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/Toshiba_Satellite_L775D_S7340";>at this site, and powering off seems to work normally now. I think the key part was the keyboard/touchpad solution of adding "i8042.nomux=1 i8042.reset" to the kernel line in GRUB (actually the "linux" line in GRUB2, IIRC). Before I did that, it restarted on me once when I put it to sleep. Of course, the keyboard wouldn't work so I had to reboot and lost the session, but after I added that to GRUB2 I haven't had the problem again, either with sleep or shutting down completely. Is anyone still working on this? This also causes issues with sleep/hibernate. @jsalisbury: I tried the 3.2-rc2(i386) kernel, but get no graphics at all - just a black screen with the backlight on - after selecting it in GRUB.
