Either I was mistaken, the bug has been fixed, or a restart of rhythmbox made the difference: a last.fm entry has appeard on the side pane, where I can enter my credentials. If a restart was indeed necessary I'd like to remark that this is counterintuitive / should not be necessary in my opinion. I can not reproduce the behaviour; as soon as I select last.fm in the plugins windows, the last.fm entry appears on the side pane.
