I was installing amd64 version in Virtualbox on an 64bit machine, there was no foreign architecture here. On a second attempt I did not opt for installing updates or 3rd party software and the install was successful with no apparent errors. Of course I can't say for certain that is what the error was on the first attempt but it is the only thing I did differently.
