I'm happy to include an upstart job in the Debian package, but I think it should be minimal and not try to read a user from mpd.conf and muck around with directory ownership. It is a mistake that this was added to the initscript; it doesn't do what's needed to freely configure any user in mpd.conf; and unless someone explains why this is a good thing it will be removed soon. mpd can run as a system service, as the mpd user. Alternatively, it can be started from a user's session, which allows every user to have his own music database and has the added benefit of working well with a per-user pulseaudio setup.
