[Bug 938817] Re: blank screen on new laptops

2012-04-09 Thread madbiologist
Exactly what Radeon graphics are in this laptop? If it's the new HD7000
series, it is not supported by the version of the open-source driver
used in the 3.2 kernel which is used in Ubuntu 12.04 "Precise Pangolin"
and you will need to use the proprietary AMD fglrx (Catalyst) driver.
Support for the Radeon HD7000 series has just been added to the upstream
3.4 kernel which is currently under development.

[Bug 938817] Re: blank screen on new laptops

2012-03-09 Thread Brad Figg
Thank you for taking the time to file a bug report on this issue.

However, given the number of bugs that the Kernel Team receives during
any development cycle it is impossible for us to review them all.
Therefore, we occasionally resort to using automated bots to request
further testing. This is such a request.

We have noted that there is a newer version of the development kernel
than the one you last tested when this issue was found. Please test
again with the newer kernel and indicate in the bug if this issue still
exists or not.

You can update to the latest development kernel by simply running the
following commands in a terminal window:

sudo apt-get update
sudo apt-get upgrade

If the bug still exists, change the bug status from Incomplete to
Confirmed. If the bug no longer exists, change the bug status from
Incomplete to Fix Released.

If you want this bot to quit automatically requesting kernel tests, add
a tag named: bot-stop-nagging.

Thank you for your help, we really do appreciate it.

[Bug 938817] Re: blank screen on new laptops

2012-03-05 Thread Saie Surendra
hi brad, i cant do sudo anything or anything on the terminal as I cant even get
into ubuntu, i get blank screen after choosing it from grub.
I have tried the nomodeset settings etc.
No live cds work, ive tried 4 different versions of ubuntu.

however today i tried xubuntu 10.10 which seemed to work from live cd,
if that would be of any use.

[Bug 938817] Re: blank screen on new laptops

2012-03-05 Thread Joseph Salisbury
Are you able to access the grub menu? This can be done by holding shift
after powering the system on. If you can get to the grub menu, can you
boot in to recovery mode?

There are also some hints at the following wiki that my help capture further
debugging information:

[Bug 938817] Re: blank screen on new laptops

2012-03-05 Thread Saie Surendra
Im sorry, it does not boot from live cd, it does not even boot past a blank
screen, how am I meant to get any codes or logs at all?
The problem is that the grpahics driver is not supported here..
I do not know what else can be done

** Changed in: linux (Ubuntu)
   Status: Incomplete => Confirmed

** Description changed:

I have been waiting 3 months now with my new laptop,
Ubuntu installs but when I boot into it i get a darn blank screen,
i tried doing all the nomodeset switch off etc etc, nothign works!
I thaught wubi would be updated by now and kept trying, every time it flops,
ive downloaded several cds and get the same problem!!!

I don't even know if this problem will be fixed in 12.04
and theres no realistic way for me to run 11.10, no way od updating.

  I have a HP pavilon G6
  Dual core AMD radeon graphics

I might be missing something simple, but im not a professional user,
just a normal home user who prefers ubuntu over windows
+
+
+ Let me re-emphasize, no live CD or versions of ubuntu work (blank
+ screen), so I can NOT get log files or anything of the sort

2012-03-05 Thread Joseph Salisbury
Are you able to boot with a Live cd? If so, can you do that and run:
apport-collect 938817

Also, have you ever been able to or tried to run earlier versions of
Ubuntu?

Sounds like it's more likely to be a kernel or X bug than anything wrong
with Wubi itself.
